As the first month of the year comes to a close, it is certain that most of us are making (or have made) their New Year’s Resolutions or some major life changes - health-wise, relationship-wise, etc. Others are taking a more drastic approach, using this opportunity to reexamine their relationship with their career.
So, whether you’re looking for your next dream job or you have set a goal in your current career, here are some steps you need to conquer your resolution.
1. Aim for progress rather than perfection
This year, try to frame your goal in terms of the knowledge you will acquire along the way, people you will meet, and experiences you will gather. In other words, set your expectations so that you can reach your goal. Incremental movement is fine, as long as it is moving you forward.
2. Hold yourself accountable
It’s easy to set goals for yourself. However, the hard part is following through with them. If you’re looking to make the career-boosting changes like the ones on this list, you need to hold yourself accountable. Write your goals down and on those days that you need the extra push, look back at what you wrote to help you stay on track.
3. Mind your network!
Did you know that you are the average of the 5 people you spend most of your time with? This is true in the social setting but even more so, in a professional setting, especially since most of our adult life is spent in the workplace.
The power of the people you associate with is incredible. They determine how do you think and how do you act and, consequently, how far you will get in your own journey.
Surround yourself with positive people who believe in your dreams, encourage your ideas, support your ambitions, and bring out the best in you.
The company you keep does have an impact and influence your choices. So choose carefully and be selective!
4. Diversify your skillset.
Learn! Learn! Learn! We can’t say this enough times. Learning empowers you. It sets you apart. Just because you’re a graduate, doesn’t mean that your learning curve should plateau. Accelerator programs such as the Skills2Grow program are designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills you require to make those career moves.
